Jwaneng — The Ministry of Education and Skills Development initiated the adopt a school programme in 2011 to bring on board the private sector, individuals and the community in the provision of education. As a result, one company that immensely contributed to the education sector is Majwe Mining Joint Venture.

In 2013, the company adopted four primary schools and two junior secondary schools in Jwaneng and Mogale Junior Secondary School in Mookane.

The schools were sponsored to the tune of P1 millon, which was distributed over a period of three years.

By then Majwe mining project director, Mr Ian Mcrae, explained that their idea was to celebrate students' achievements.

Recently, Majwe Mining held the academic excellence awards for all the schools to celebrate the extension of their partnership with the schools by yet another year to the value of P300 000 and the money will be used to fund prize giving events for different schools in 2016.

In addition the programme would include Mookane Primary School.

Speaking at the event Morama Junior Secondary School head, Ms Mpho Lesego said that Majwe Mining realised there was a need to reach out to pupils in order to pave a positive future for them and more importantly to heed the government's challenge of poor academic performance.

She said life had never been the same since launch of the programme in 2013, adding that they had noticed high competitive spirit among learners in schools.

Majwe mining project director Mr Rod Frazer, said the primary objective of the programme was to improve the examination results in the region and to achieve one of Botswana's vision 2016 pillars.

"While I am sure that the community has benefited from the program, I didn't think it is at all a one way street, we at Majwe Mining as an organization have benefited as well," Mr Frazer commented.

He further said that the programme had given them the opportunity to live up to their four values of respect, integrity delivery and legacy. Mr Fraser encouraged the students to live life to the fullest and reach for the amazing potential that resided in them.
